Kartal Karagedik

Kartal Karagedik was born in 1984 in Izmir, and began his vocal studies at the age of 18 at the Izmir State Conservatory, where he also took lessons in Composition and Conducting. He has participated in Masterclasses with renowned singers such as Rolando Panerai, Edda Moser, Barbara Frittoli and Luciana Serra.

Between 2009 and 2013, while engaged at the theatre in Magdeburg, he had the opportunity to add major roles to his repertoire including Don Giovanni, Germont, Enrico in “Lucia di Lammermoor” and Rodrigo in “Don Carlo”.

Kartal was a member of the ensemble at the Theatre Erfurt for 2 seasons, where, as a guest in the spring of 2013, he made his successful début in the title role of Simon Boccanegra. In Erfurt he also sang the roles of Rodrigo in Don Carlo , Eugene Onegin, Carlo Gerard in Andrea Chenier and Valentin in Faust.

Other guest engagements have included Sharpless at the Puccini Festival in Torre del Lago Peter in Hänsel und Gretel at the Leipzig Opera, the role of Riccardo in I Puritani at Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Simon Boccanegra in Augsburg, and Mischonnet in Adriana Lecouvreur at Theater Freiburg. He made his European début at the Teatro Sociale in Como, in the title role in Verdi’s “Falstaff” in 2008, being 2nd cast to Ambrogio Maestri.

Kartal joined the ensemble of the Hamburg State Opera at the beginning of the 2015-2016 season, making his débuts in new productions of Les Troyens (Chorebe), under the baton of Kent Nagano, and as Il Conte Almaviva in Stefan Herheim’s production of Le nozze di Figaro. Other roles in Hamburg included Lescaut in Manon Lescaut, Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, Sonora in La Fanciulla del West and Marcello in La bohème. In the summer of last season he sung the title role of Don Giovanni at the Savonlinna Opera Festival in Finland. Future engagements in Hamburg include: A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Demetrius), L’elisir d’amour (Belcore), La bohème (Marcello) and Les troyens (Chorèbe). Kartal is also due to sing the role of Escamillo in the Komische Oper Berlin’s production of Carmen.

Kartal Karagedik has won more than 10 awards at international singing competitions including 1st prize in the Début Competition, 2nd prize in the Leyla Gencer and Beniamino Gigli Competitions and 3rd prize in the Ottavio Ziino Competition and the Competizione dell’Opera.

In addition to his career as a singer, Mr. Karagedik has published several articles in newspapers as an author and is an enthusiastic, story-telling photographer. In 2014 his first documentary photography exhibition “EmotionsINmotion” met with widespread public acclaim.
