Sebastian Ritschel

Sebastian Ritschel was born in Düsseldorf and studied Musicology and Dramatics at the University of Leipzig. Since 2006-2007 he has been engaged at the Theater Görlitz, where his first staged works included Act 1 of Richard Wagners DIE WALKÜRE (2007) and WEIßE ROSE by Udo Zimmermann (2008). In 2009 he lead the performance of the opera LINKERHAND by Moritz Eggert and Andrea Heuser to its world premiere.

In 2010 he staged his first CARMEN by Georges Bizet followed by Gluck’s ORPHEUS AND EURYDIKE.

In 2011 his new productions included LA TRAVIATA and DER VOGELHÄNDLER, followed, in 2012 and 2013, by ARABELLA, EUGENE ONEGIN, Jerry Bock’s FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, LE NOZZE DI FIGARO and an open air version of ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE.

During the 2013/2014 season he directed THE FLYING DUTCHMAN, DER ROSENKAVALIER as well as Sondheim’s musical thriller, SWEENEY TODD.

In the last two seasons, his productions in Görlitz have included HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, UN BALLO IN MASCHERA and Jerry Hermann’s LA CAGE AUX FOLLES.

From summer 2016, Sebastian Ritschel will pursue a freelance career.

Since 2011 he holds the position of Lecturer of the Masterclass “Opera” at the Hochschule für Musik “Carl Maria von Weber” in Dresden.
