Thomas Mohr received his training at the musical academy of Lübeck, where he gained his diploma and passed his concert examination with distinction. While still a student he won first prizes at s’Hertogenbosch, at the VDMK competition in Berlin and at the Walther Gruner competition in London. At this time he also began to study under Anna Reynolds, with whom he still works today.
After periods in Bremen and Mannheim he joined the company of the Bonn opera and worked with renowned directors, such as: Giancarlo del Monaco, Jürgen Rose, Werner Schroeter, Andras Fricsay Kali Son and Andreas Homoki. He performed major baritone roles such as: Silvio, Albert, di Luna, Lescaut and Germont père, Eisenstein, The Father in Hänsel und Gretel, Count Almaviva and Papageno. On the concert platform his attention centred on Orff’s Carmina burana, Brahms’ German Requiem and Britten’s War Requiem.
Freelance since 1997, Thomas Mohr has sung at many of the world’s premier concert and opera venues. These include the Bayerische Staatsoper Munich, the Opernhaus Zürich and Semperoper Dresden. He has worked with such renowned conductors as: Kent Nagano, Nikolaus Harnoncourt, Gerd Albrecht, Lorin Maazel, Leonard Slatkin, Antonio Pappano, Christoph von Dohnányi, Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, Bernhard Klee, Sir Georg Solti and Zubin Mehta. Following his début with the Los Angeles Philharmoic Orchestra in 2000 he has been invited to sing with, amongst others, the Deutschen Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, the Bavarian Radio symphony Orchestra, the Boston Symphony Orchestra and at the Tanglewood festival.
Some years ago Thomas Mohr underwent a change in vocal category: in the 2005/6 season he made highly successful appearances as Idomeneo and as Siegmund in Robert Carsen’s Nibelung’s Ring, and April 2006 saw his much noted début as Parsifal in Erfurt. Since then he has sung many new roles, most notably Danilo, in a new production of Die lustige Witwe in Cologne, Eisenstein in Munich, both Danilo and Eisenstein as well as The Officer in Hindemith’s Cardillac at the Semperoper Dresden, and Max in a new production of Der Freischütz in Cologne and St. Gallen. He also participated in the world premiere of Peter Ruzicka’s Höderlin at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin and featured in performances of Die Fledermaus (Cologne) and Parsifal (Erfurt, Malmö and Teatr Wielki in Poznan). He also made his début as Loge in Das Rheingold in Leipzig and Siegmund in the Halle/Ludwigshafen Ring production.
He made his début in Das Lied von der Erde in 2009 with the Gürzenich-Orchester Köln. In 2012 he sung Beethoven IX in Tokyo under the baton of Sir Roger Norrington. Since then he has appeared in Poznan for Parsifal (Parsifal) at the Teatr Wielki, Halle for Die Walküre (Siegmund) and Leipzig for revivals of Götterdämmerung (Siegfried), Der Freischütz (Max) and Das Rheingold (Loge). Recent concert engagements include: The Dream of Gerontius in Zürich and Basel, Das Lied von der Erde in Münster, a tour of Beethoven IX in Switzerland with the Basler Kammerorchester, Gurrelieder in Katowice, Poland, and Bruchs’s Loreley with the Rundfunkorchester München.
Since the winter term of 2002/2003 he teaches singing at the Bremen Academy of the Arts.
